What Our Clients Say
“It’s almost overwhelming how I feel after our yoga session. I feel so comfortable after we are done, I am no longer in pain & I’m really not sure what to do next. I feel lighter and definitely more relaxed than when we begin. Thank you so much!” – Ben
Yoga for People with a Cancer Experience
I am starting to teach a 7 week series, called CalmSteadyStrong tm: Yoga for people that have had a cancer experience and their loved ones. It will be 7 consecutive weeks of therapeutic yoga (breath & movement) that has been a topic of research at the University of Calgary.
“The research has shown that people who complete the program have physiological and psychological gains. They experience improved moods and quality of life and less of a feeling of helplessness. For those going through cancer treatment, there is more ease associated with the chemotherapy and radiation treatments.” University of Calgary & Functional Synergy.
Yoga will help speed your body's natural healing by enhancing communication between your nervous system and the rest of your body. You will experience improved body awareness, ranges of movement and strength, all while deepening your ability to relax and recharge. Traditional fitness and weight training often leads to tightness and tension. However, yoga does quite the opposite.
-Frequently Asked Questions-
1) Philosophy of the program
The philosophy of our program is based upon the basic question, "what next?" Cancer patients often undergo treatment and then they are given the go ahead by their oncologists to "go live life" and resume their activities, but then they wonder "now what?" Some people experience sadness or depression, and a sense of disassociation from family and friends. This program can help people move forward and rebuild their lives and begin to regain what they had.
2)Style of Yoga
Ease in Motion teaches therapeutic yoga, a movement system that improves body mechanics, breathing, flexibility and strength. Using therapeutic yoga we will work slowly yet progressively, customizing the challenge for each individual. After only 7 weeks you will feel stronger, more relaxed and more in control. This program could be compared to that of a gentle Hatha yoga - physical movement & breath.
3) Do I need to be Flexible?
No. If you can breathe, you can do yoga. Yoga will help you gain flexibility in your body, but you don't have to come in flexible. As we age, our body’s get stiffer and moving is a way to combat that process.
4) Is there Weight Bearing?
In this level 1 program, there are standing poses to help you gain strength in your legs; however, there are no arm balancing poses, so you will not be putting body weight into your arms. There are no inversions (head/hand stands), only gentle movement and breath with an emphasis on finding ease in your movement.
By the end of the 7 week program participants say they are able to: Reduce pain. Manage stress. Regain movement and breath and move forward in their lives.
Research alone doesn't compare to what participants have shared after participating in this program:
- "I need connection with someone who has experienced something similar."
- "Sometimes support groups are too intense, but movement isn't."
- "Other yoga instructors don't offer the same expertise."
- “I am using the yoga to transition between surgeries.”
- "I got so much more from the program than I anticipated."
Please consult your doctor before starting any movement program.
